fort of santana

About the attraction

welcome to the majestic fort of santana, a historic landmark strategically located in the heart of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Built in 1761, this imposing fort is a living testament to past times and the battles fought to protect the village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro. With panoramic views of the stunning North and South bays, Forte de Santana offers a unique experience that combines fascinating history with stunning landscapes.

Imagine plunging into the pages of history during the Armada Revolts and the Federalist Revolution, when this fort bravely exchanged fire with rebel squadrons that defied order. Its walls still tell the stories of the cannons' booms and the tense moments that shaped the destiny of the region. Among these memories, the bombardment by the cruiser República stands out, which left deep marks on the fort's structures.

After years of transformations, Forte de Santana found a new vocation as a haven of knowledge and culture. Since 1975, it has proudly housed the PM Major Lara Ribas Weapons Museum, a rich and diverse collection of historical artifacts. Here, you'll find everything from antique weapons that have withstood the test of time to precious pieces collected by Major Lara Ribas between 1938 and 1945. As you wander through the museum's rooms, you'll be immersed in the stories told through replica uniforms, evocative photographs and honorable insignia. The museum is currently closed for renovations, and only external visits are possible!

For the curious on duty, a hint of mystery awaits. There are unconfirmed reports that suggest that Lieutenant Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes, a key figure in the Inconfidência Mineira, served here between 1777 and 1779. During that time, he acted as an officer sent by the Portuguese court to reinforce the defenses of Santa Catarina Island against potential Spanish invasions. The mystique of this historic connection adds an extra touch of allure to the already intriguing Fort Santana.

Do you want to delve into history and discover the secrets of this emblematic place? Don't wait any longer! The doors of Forte de Santana are open to visitors eager for knowledge and adventure, with admission free of charge.

Tip: Take advantage of the late afternoon to visit the fort and witness the magic of the sunset, which paints the sky with dazzling colors, framed by the view of the majestic Hercílio Luz Bridge.
