What to do in Florianópolis during the long weekend: tips for enjoying the Magic Island between Easter and Tiradentes

Introduction

You blinked and another long weekend is coming! With Good Friday on April 18th, Easter right after on the 20th and the Tiradentes holiday on April 21st, we have a perfect combo to escape the routine and enjoy incredible days. And guess what the perfect destination is? It's right: Florianópolis, the darling of southern Brazil!

If you're thinking about coming here or have already packed your bags, this post is for you. We've put together some great tips from people who know the island well — from what to do, where to eat, what to visit calmly and even those little surprises that make a difference during your trip.

Why is Florianópolis a good idea for the long weekend?

Floripa is a delightful mix of nature, culture, gastronomy and good vibes. And the best part is that you can enjoy much more than just the beaches! April is a great month here — the heat gives a break, the sea is still pleasant and the crowds are lighter than in the summer. With Easter right next to Tiradentes, you can even plan a 4 or 5-day itinerary to enjoy the best of the island without rushing.

Day 1: Start in the Center — culture, history and clam pie

Set aside your first day to breathe in the historic heart of Floripa. Start at Museum of Florianopolis, at the Cruz e Sousa Palace. Then walk along the Praça XV de Novembro, take a walk around the famous centuries-old fig tree (yes, it's tradition!) and visit the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral

Right next door is the Public market, one of the most iconic spots in the city. This is where you can try shrimp or clam pastries, have a cold draft beer or enjoy delicious seafood dishes at the stalls. If you can, go on a day with live music — the atmosphere is contagious.

Extra tip: If you’re feeling energetic, rent an electric scooter and head to Beira-Mar Norte in the late afternoon. The view of the sunset from there is breathtaking!

Day 2: Nature Day — Botanical Garden and Santo Antônio de Lisboa

Saturday is perfect for breathing fresh air. In the morning, go to the Florianopolis Botanical Garden, a green haven in the middle of the city. If you go during Easter, you might still be lucky enough to catch a performance by the group “Mané Culture”, with music and dance typical of the island.

After lunch, set off for Saint Anthony of Lisbon, a neighborhood with the feel of an Azorean village. Walk along the cobblestone streets, discover local crafts and sit in one of the restaurants by the bay. Our suggestion? Parish Oyster Bar & Restaurant. Fresh seafood, oysters served in different variations and a sunset that looks like a painting.

Day 3: Easter Sunday — Relax and Savor

Sunday is a day to rest… and eat well! How about a boat trip to the Lagoon Coast? In addition to the incredible view, this is where you will find family restaurants with typical island food. Flavor of the Coast, at Ponto 16, is a classic: friendly service and always fresh fish. You can get there by boat or by trail light, if you're in the mood.

And of course, Easter calls for sweets! After lunch, choose a store in the FairyLand Bakery & May — has branches in several neighborhoods. The cakes, cupcakes and the famous codfish coxinha are irresistible!

Day 4: Monday with a beach (or trail) vibe

If you've extended your holiday, Monday is the day to explore the east and south of the island. Start at Conce Lagoonidog, with its little shops and cafes. Right there you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board and enjoy the view of the lagoon.

Then choose between beach or adventure:

  • Mole Beach or Joaquina: perfect for sunbathing and watching surfers in action. And if you're in Joaquina, take the opportunity to explore the dunes which are located right behind the beach. This is where one of the most beloved activities for those who visit Floripa takes place: the skibunda! You rent a board (very cheap) and slide down the sand, with lots of laughter and adrenaline. A light, fun experience that makes for incredible photos!
  • Lagoinha do Leste Trail: If you enjoy a trail with an epic reward at the end, this is a must-do. The view from the top of the hill will make you want to stop time.

Day 5: North of the Island — fortresses, beaches and farewells

Last day? Take your time. Head to the North of the Island, where you will find some of the most beautiful and family-friendly beaches in the city. A good idea is to start with Fortress of Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa, which in addition to an incredible historical view, has one of the most beautiful views of the Island.

Afterwards, enjoy the surrounding beaches as Traditional Jurerê, Canasvieiras or Praia do Forte. And if you want a lunch that feels like the end of your trip, choose a restaurant with a sea view.

Churches worth visiting: faith, history and beauty

And as we’ve already mentioned, Florianópolis is MUCH more than just beaches. During the Easter holiday, one of the most special ways to experience the island’s culture and history is by visiting its churches — which are true architectural and spiritual treasures. Whether out of faith, curiosity or love of history, visiting these temples is a tour that touches the heart and enchants the eyes. Here are some that you should visit: it needs include in your itinerary:

Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis (Our Lady of Exile)

Located in the heart of the Historic Center, it is one of the city's icons. The Cathedral has an imposing façade and a beautiful interior, with colorful stained glass windows and an impressive altar. During Holy Week, it usually holds special masses and is a great place to experience the spiritual side of your trip.

Church of Our Lady of Conception

This historic monument, built in 1780, is one of the most beautiful examples of Portuguese architecture in Santa Catarina. In addition to its historical value, it is a great place to stop, take a breath and take beautiful photos with the bucolic scenery in the background. It is usually open to visitors and has a very calming vibe.

Church of Our Lady of Necessities – Saint Anthony of Lisbon

This is one of those churches that looks like it came out of a painting. Built in 1756, facing the sea, the church is a gem in the most charming Azorean neighborhood in Floripa. If you go in the late afternoon, you can still watch the sunset right there in the square, with the church illuminated by the golden light of the end of the day. It's breathtaking.

Church of Our Lady of Lapa – Ribeirão da Ilha

Located in the charming neighborhood of Ribeirão da Ilha, this 18th-century church is one of the oldest religious heritage sites in Florianópolis. Its colonial architecture preserves original elements, and the interior houses beautiful works of religious art. It was the scene of important moments in local history, including a visit by Emperor Dom Pedro II, who contributed financially to its conservation.

Where to stay

If you want convenience, staying in the city center or near Beira-Mar can make getting around easier. However, if you prefer waking up to the sound of the sea, the regions of Campeche, Lagoa da Conceição or Norte da Ilha are excellent.

How to get around

You can explore a lot of places using Uber/99 or buses, but renting a car can be a good idea if you want to visit more remote beaches or go hiking. Scooters and bikes are also great options on Beira-Mar and in several neighborhoods in the city.
