Official Opening of the Mullet Harvest in Florianópolis

About the attraction

The arrival of the month of May in Florianópolis marks the beginning of one of the most symbolic traditions of local culture: the mullet harvest. Between May and July, artisanal fishermen experience the peak of their connection with the sea, keeping alive a centuries-old practice that spans generations.

In 2025, the official opening of the harvest will be celebrated in three different locations in the city, bringing together residents and visitors in moments of faith, culture and community. The celebrations take place on May 1st, at Jurerê Beach (from 5 am), Campeche Beach (from 8am), and at Praia do Moçambique (from 1pm).

The tradition of mullet fishing in Florianópolis is more than just an economic activity: it is a cultural heritage. The practice involves artisanal techniques passed down from father to son, rituals of protection and gratitude, and the strong mobilization of coastal communities. The opening of the harvest is marked by religious ceremonies, processions, folklore presentations such as the Boi de Mamão, community cafés and cultural activities that pay homage to the history and work of the fishermen.

Throughout the season, visitors will be able to see the decorated fishing huts, watch the movement of canoes and nets, and, with luck, witness the spectacle of mullet being pulled onto the sand — one of the most exciting moments of the local culture.

The opening of the harvest is a unique opportunity to connect with the identity of Florianópolis and celebrate the deep relationship between man and the sea.
