Just 40 minutes from Florianópolis, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz annually celebrates one of the most significant cultural events in the southern region of Brazil: the traditional Festa do Divino Espírito Santo. Recognized for its symbolic power and religiousness, the festival has been held since 1854, brought to the city by Azorean immigrants.
Its origins date back to 1226, in Alenquer, Portugal, when Queen Saint Isabel made a promise to the Divine Holy Spirit asking for peace for the royal family. Her prayers were answered, and the queen crowned a poor man as a symbol of divine justice and offered a great banquet to the community — a gesture that has spanned centuries and oceans, becoming one of the pillars of Azorean culture in Brazil.
Since then, the festival has transformed, respecting the Church's guidelines and keeping up with the times, without losing its essence of faith, solidarity and celebration. Today, it is considered the most traditional Festa do Divino in the South of the country, bringing together residents, devotees and visitors in an event that moves and enchants.
Over the course of four days, visitors can experience a program rich in religion, culture and music. The imperial procession, the presence of the court, the Holy Mass, musical shows, performances by the Santo Amaro Philharmonic Band and the traditional “Burial of the Bones” form a true spectacle of faith and popular culture.
In addition, the Divino Bakery and Confectionery is open daily, offering typical delicacies, while the bar and kitchen service guarantees the flavors that mark the party.
