Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Florianópolis: A Spiritual Adventure

Introduction

Did you know that Florianópolis is part of the famous Camino de Santiago de Compostela? That's right! In addition to being known for its paradisiacal beaches and breathtaking landscapes, our beloved Island of Magic also offers a unique pilgrimage experience. Below we will tell you everything about the Brazilian Way, a route that goes from Canasvieiras to the English, providing an unparalleled spiritual and cultural journey.

What is the Camino de Santiago de Compostela?

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela is one of the oldest and most revered pilgrimage routes in the world. Since the 9th century, pilgrims from all corners have walked to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, where the remains of Saint James the Greater, one of Jesus' apostles, are believed to lie.

And Florianópolis is officially part of this historical journey. Since 2017, the route had already been part of the religious route, but it was on October 10, 2023 that the route gained even more strength with the sanction of a law by Mayor Topázio Neto, allowing new initiatives for the demarcation and maintenance of the route.

The Route: Step by Step

The route has a total of 21km and the starting point is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in Canasvieiras. This is the beginning of a journey that combines faith, history and beautiful landscapes. From there, pilgrims follow Rua Afonso Cardoso da Veiga, reaching the Canasvieiras Beach.

From Praia de Canasvieiras, the route continues to Cachoeira do Bom Jesus Beach towards Rua Alcina Jannis and then Avenida Luiz Boiteux Piazza. At the end of the Avenue, pilgrims visit the historic St. Peter's Church. This point is perfect for a break and reflection, as well as enjoying the architecture and serenity of the place.

Continuing along Estrada Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos, you will arrive at Lagoinha Beach. This peaceful beach is an invitation to rest and contemplation. Take the opportunity to dip your feet in the water and recharge your energy for the next stretches.

After Praia da Lagoinha, you have two options: follow Estrada Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos towards Brava Beach or venture through Morro do Rapa trail. The trail is more challenging, but the panoramic views are worth the effort. The Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos road offers a quieter and equally beautiful route.

After arriving at Praia Brava, and walking along the beach, you will arrive at Morro da Feiticeira Trail: This is one of the most exciting sections of the route. The trail connects to Brava Beach The Praia dos Ingleses, providing spectacular views. It's a path that requires a little more physical preparation, but it's worth every step.

Getting at Praia dos Ingleses, you will follow the beach until Estrada Vereador Onildo Lemos, where you will find the Church of Our Lady of Navigators. Then you follow Estrada Dom João Becker which will take you to Sacred Heart of Jesus Sanctuary, us English, where the path ends. This is a place of peace and reflection, perfect to conclude your pilgrimage.
