Ratones Fortresses  

With an imposing architecture, the Ratones Fortresses it was strategically designed with two batteries of cannons, forming a triangular arrangement together with the Fortresses of Anhatomirim and São José da Ponta Grossa. Their mission was to protect the northern entrance to the island and keep the place safe. 

Today, you will find several fascinating buildings within this historic complex. There is the Commander's House, the Troop Barracks, the Officers' House, the Powder Magazine, the Palamenta House, the Guard House, the Troop Kitchen, the Flour House and the Fountain. Each of these buildings has its own captivating history and offers an incredible insight into the past.

Anhatomirim Fortress  

The Santa Cruz Fortress, also known as Anhatomirim Fortress, is an unmissable historical treasure! Its walls and buildings are incredibly well preserved. 

Located on Anhatomirim Island, strategically positioned at the entrance to the North Bay, this fortress played a fundamental role in the 18th century, forming part of the triangular defense system devised by Brigadier José da Silva Paes. Nowadays, you can explore the Portada, the Commander's House and the Troop Barracks in this place full of history.

Our Lady of Araçatuba Fortress 

Last but not least, there is the Our Lady of Araçatuba Fortress. Although it is not possible to visit it up close, you can admire it from the beautiful Praia dos Naufragados. 

This fortress was designed and built by Brigadier José da Silva Paes, the first governor of the Captaincy of Santa Catarina (1739-1745). It is located at the entrance to the South Bay and played a crucial role as the last piece of the island's defense system in the first half of the 18th century. This network of fortifications also included the Fortresses of Anhatomirim, Ratones and São José da Ponta Grossa, forming a true protective shield for the island of Santa Catarina. These fortresses had the mission of consolidating the occupation of southern Brazil and serving as a strategic base to maintain Portuguese dominance over the Colony of Sacramento. Even though it is not accessible up close, the view of Fortaleza Nossa Senhora de Araçatuba from Praia dos Naufragados is impressive and is part of the rich history of this region.
