A Chapel of the Child God It is one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in Florianópolis, highlighted by the impressive Hospital de Caridade in the background. Located on a beautiful green plot of land, the chapel has the second largest collection of sacred art in the city and a history rich in achievements, beliefs and remarkable events.
It all started with Joana de Gusmão, a devotee born in Santos, who donated her assets and joined the Third Order of Penance. She was given land on a hill and, in 1762, built the Chapel of the Child God. Next door, he built his house and founded a school for girls. In 1764, the chapel received the impressive image of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, carved in wood by Francisco das Chagas. The sculpture, originally destined for Rio Grande do Sul, ended up staying in Florianópolis due to storms that prevented the ship from continuing its journey. Believing it to be a divine sign, the community began to venerate the image, giving rise to the famous Procession of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, which takes place every year on Passion Sunday.
The Brotherhood of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, founded in 1765, was essential for the growth of social works in the city. Initially offering free healthcare and affordable medicine, growing demand led to the construction of Santa Casa. In 1845, a new hospital was inaugurated in the presence of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Empress Dona Teresa Cristina. Although a fire in 1994 destroyed much of the hospital, it was quickly rebuilt with community support. Today, the Senhor Jesus dos Passos Cultural Foundation plans to open the Santa Catarina Farmaco-Hospital Museum and create the Menino Deus Ecological Park, preserving an extensive area of the Atlantic Forest. Furthermore, the land offers a spectacular panoramic view of the center of Florianópolis and is home to the historic Irmandade Cemetery, where important figures from the city rest.
