Fortress of Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa

Come see the dazzling Fortress of Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa, one of the most important fortifications in colonial Brazil! Built in 1740 to protect the North Barra of Santa Catarina Island, the Fortaleza has a privileged view of the North Bay and is located between the beautiful beaches of Santa Catarina. With three batteries of cannons and 31 pieces of artillery, the Fortress controlled the vessels that reached the coast of Santa Catarina, being strategically located halfway between the port of Rio de Janeiro and the Colônia do Santíssimo Sacramento in Rio da Prata. Its architecture features several constructive elements distributed across three staggered terraces, and it is the only fortress that has a chapel among its buildings.
