Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Located next to the Lauro Muller State School, in the center of the capital, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict, affectionately known as “The Escadaria Church”, is a historic landmark in Florianópolis. Built in 1750 by the Irmandade Beneficente Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Benedito dos Homens Pretos, this temple is a testimony to the devotion and resilience of the Afro-descendant community at the time.

Completing 273 years in 2023, the church features imposing architecture and elegant lines. In its simple interior, visitors find treasures such as implements and sacred images, including the venerated Our Lady of the Rosary. In addition to its historical and religious value, the church is also famous for the stunning panorama painted by Victor Meirelles in the 19th century, depicting the city with the South Bay in the background.

The Escadaria do Rosário, which leads to the temple, is a lively meeting point, with several bars and restaurants along its route. It is a place where history mixes with contemporary life, offering visitors a unique experience in Florianópolis.
