A San Francisco Church, a historic landmark in Florianópolis, is a testament to the city's rich religious heritage. Located in the historic center, this church, also known as Deodoro church, preserves much of its original baroque and neoclassical style architecture. Founded by the Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance, the church has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century.
Since its installation in the capital of Santa Catarina in 1745, the Third Order of Saint Francis of Penitence has exerted great influence, although it initially did not have its own church. For 70 years, services were held in a chapel attached to the main church. The construction of the church itself was possible thanks to the generosity of Domingos Francisco de Araújo, who donated the land in 1754. After requesting a license from Prince Regent D. José in 1802, the foundation stone was laid in the same year.
Despite facing challenges over the years, such as rumors of the towers collapsing in 1851, the church persevered. Finally, after 112 years of construction, it was inaugurated in 1915. It recently underwent an extensive restoration process that began in 2012, completed in 2019, involving 26 restorers and an investment of approximately R$ 6.9 million.
In addition to its historical significance, the São Francisco Church continues to be a place of devotion, with masses held from Monday to Friday at 4pm. Whether to admire its stunning architecture or to participate in a spiritual experience, a visit to Igreja São Francisco is a unique opportunity to connect with the history and faith of Florianópolis.
