explore the Historical Museum “Gilberto Gerlach” and dive into the history of São José!
Our museum aims to preserve and enhance the city's memory, safeguarding its rich cultural and historical heritage. The collection is diverse and reflects the customs and traditions of São José over the years.
In addition to offering public visits to the collection, the Historical Museum also plays an important social role, interacting with the community through opportunities for study, leisure and cultural events. We want to involve you in this unique experience!
Explore the collection integrated into the history of the municipality, which covers more than 270 years of the region's history. In addition to visits to the museum, we offer guided tours of the charming Historic Center of San Jose through the Knowing São José Project.
On the lower floor, you will find the Arts Gallery, a space where we hold unmissable events and exhibitions.
In honor of Gilberto Gerlach, an important figure in the city's cultural development, the museum was named after him in September 2021. Gerlach was a renowned filmmaker, historian, writer and a significant influence on the Josef and Brazilian cultural scene. In the museum, you will find a space dedicated to him, with personal items such as an old film projector, medals and records of his participation in the Cannes Festival, as well as his regional-historical books written by himself and in collaboration with other writers.
O Solar dos Ferreira de Mello, where the museum is located, was the first building listed as heritage in the municipality. Restored in 1984, the place witnessed important moments in the history of São José and Santa Catarina. In 1893, during the Federalist Revolution, it housed the headquarters of the National Guard and the Provisional State Government. In 1845, he received a visit from Emperor Dom Pedro II. This Portuguese-Brazilian style construction is a valuable example of the architecture of the time.
Come visit the “Gilberto Gerlach” Historical Museum and embark on a fascinating journey through the history and culture of São José.
