meet the Tamar Project in Florianópolis.
Southern Brazil is an important feeding ground for sea turtles, especially in their juvenile stages. Its cold sands do not provide a good place for reproduction, which is why turtle nesting events are rare in this region.
In 2005, the base of the Fundação Projeto Tamar de Florianópolis was created to support activities carried out in the southern region, which focuses on mitigating the impact of fishing on sea turtles. The Visitor Center was opened in the same year with the aim of raising awareness and environmental awareness through visits by tourists, groups and schools.
The space is in Barra da Lagoa Beach, 50 meters from the sea, in an area of 5,000 m2 where the structure is fully suitable for use by wheelchair users and for visits on rainy days.
The Visitor Center is registered with IBRAM (Brazilian Institute of Museums) and receives around 200 thousand people per year, which places it as one of the 5 most visited museums in Brazil in the southern region.
Tamar has five tanks with four of the five species of sea turtles found on the Brazilian coast in different life stages: green turtle, loggerhead turtle, olive and hawksbill turtle. We also have a swimming pool and an aquarium with animals from the region.
