How about taking a stroll through downtown Florianópolis and admiring an open-air gallery? The highlight of the day is the painting by Antonieta de Barros on Tenente Silveira Street. 

Born in 1901, Antonieta was a tireless advocate for women's rights, quality education for all, and the recognition of Black culture, especially in the south of the country. She is one of the most important figures from Santa Catarina of all time, being the first Black woman to be elected a state representative in Brazil. With a background in education, Antonieta founded an educational center, a newspaper, and a magazine where she contributed under the pseudonym Maria da Ilha. 

In the mural, the mandalas represent bobbin lace, which also symbolizes the Marias of the Island – Antonieta's pseudonym. Thus, this painting is not only a tribute to her, but also to all the women of the island.

The community of Saint Anthony of Lisbon It is one of the oldest beaches in Santa Catarina and a vibrant center of Azorean culture.
