A Saint Francis Church, The Church of Our Lady of Deodoro, a historical landmark in Florianópolis, is a testament to the city's rich religious heritage. Located in the historic center, this church, also known as the Church of Deodoro, preserves much of its original Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Founded by the Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance, the church has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century.
Since its establishment in the capital of Santa Catarina in 1745, the Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance has exerted great influence, although initially it did not have its own church. For 70 years, services were held in a chapel attached to the main church. The construction of its own church was made possible thanks to the generosity of Domingos Francisco de Araújo, who donated the land in 1754. After requesting permission from Prince Regent D. José in 1802, the foundation stone was laid in the same year.
Despite facing challenges over the years, such as rumors of the towers collapsing in 1851, the church persevered. Finally, after 112 years of construction, it was inaugurated in 1915. Recently, it underwent an extensive restoration process that began in 2012 and was completed in 2019, involving 26 restorers and an approximate investment of R$ 6.9 million.
Beyond its historical significance, the São Francisco Church continues to be a place of devotion, with masses held Monday through Friday at 4 PM. Whether to admire its stunning architecture or to participate in a spiritual experience, a visit to the São Francisco Church is a unique opportunity to connect with the history and faith of Florianópolis.
