Chapel of the Child Jesus

A Chapel of the Child Jesus It is one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in Florianópolis, standing out for the impressive Hospital de Caridade in the background. Situated on beautiful green grounds, the chapel has the second largest collection of sacred art in the city and a rich history of achievements, beliefs, and significant events.

It all began with Joana de Gusmão, a devout woman born in Santos, who donated her possessions and joined the Third Order of Penance. She received land on a hill and, in 1762, built the Chapel of the Child Jesus. Next to it, she built her house and founded a school for girls. In 1764, the chapel received the impressive image of the Lord Jesus of the Steps, sculpted in wood by Francisco das Chagas. The sculpture, originally destined for Rio Grande do Sul, ended up in Florianópolis due to storms that prevented the ship from continuing its journey. Believing it to be a divine sign, the community began to venerate the image, giving rise to the famous Procession of the Lord Jesus of the Steps, which takes place every year on Passion Sunday.

The Brotherhood of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, founded in 1765, was essential to the growth of social works in the city. Initially offering free medical assistance and affordable medicines, the growing demand led to the construction of the Santa Casa (Holy House). In 1845, a new hospital was inaugurated with the presence of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Empress Dona Teresa Cristina. Although a fire in 1994 destroyed a large part of the hospital, it was quickly rebuilt with the support of the community. Today, the Senhor Jesus dos Passos Cultural Foundation plans to open the Santa Catarina Pharmaco-Hospital Museum and create the Menino Deus Ecological Park, preserving an extensive area of Atlantic Forest. Furthermore, the land offers a spectacular panoramic view of downtown Florianópolis and houses the historic Brotherhood Cemetery, where important figures of the city are buried.
