What is the Camino de Santiago de Compostela? 

The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago de Compostela) is one of the oldest and most revered pilgrimage routes in the world. Since the 9th century, pilgrims from all corners of the globe have walked to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where the remains of St. James the Greater, one of Jesus' apostles, are believed to be located. 

And Florianópolis is officially part of this historical route. Since 2017, the route has been part of the religious pilgrimage, but it was on October 10, 2023, that the path gained even more strength with the enactment of a law by Mayor Topázio Neto, allowing new initiatives for the demarcation and maintenance of the route. 

The Route: Step by Step 

The route is a total of 21km long and the starting point is... Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in Canasvieiras. This is the beginning of a journey that combines faith, history, and beautiful landscapes. From there, the pilgrims follow Rua Afonso Cardoso da Veiga, arriving at... Canasvieiras Beach.  

From Canasvieiras Beach, the route continues to... Bom Jesus Waterfall Beach heading towards Alcina Jannis Street and then Luiz Boiteux Piazza Avenue. At the end of the Avenue, pilgrims visit the historic Church of Saint Peter. This spot is perfect for a pause and reflection, as well as appreciating the architecture and serenity of the place. 

Continuing along Estrada Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos, you will arrive at Lagoinha Beach. This tranquil beach is an invitation to rest and contemplation. Take the opportunity to dip your toes in the water and recharge your energy for the stretches ahead. 

After Lagoinha Beach, you have two options: follow the Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos Road towards... Brave Beach or venture into Rapa Hill trail. The trail is more challenging, but the panoramic views make the effort worthwhile. Meanwhile, the Jornalista Jaime de Arruda Ramos road offers a more tranquil and equally beautiful route. 

After arriving at Brava beach, and walking along the beach, you will reach... Witch Hill TrailThis is one of the most exciting sections of the route. The trail connects to Brave Beach à English Beach, ...providing spectacular views. It's a path that requires a bit more physical preparation, but it's worth every step. 

Arriving at English Beach, From there, you will follow the beach until you reach Vereador Onildo Lemos Road, where you will find the... Church of Our Lady of the Navigators. Then you follow Dom João Becker Road which will take you to Sacred Heart of Jesus Sanctuary, us English, This is where the path ends. It's a place of peace and reflection, perfect for concluding your pilgrimage.

Practical Tips 

Credentials and Certificates: To obtain the Camino de Santiago certificate, it is necessary to travel at least 100 kilometers on foot or horseback, or 200 kilometers by bicycle. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, at headquarters Santa Catarina Association of Friends of the Way of St. James (ACACSC) and at the North Face store in Villa Romana Shopping Mall

Cost: The credential for the Brazilian Way costs R$ 15. For those planning to continue to Europe, the cost is R$ 30. It is important to have proof of purchase of the ticket to Spain. 

Planning: Bring water, light snacks, sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes. Although the route is done in one day, it passes through several natural and historical areas that deserve time for appreciation.
