Governor Hercílio Luz's Country Residence

Share:

A territory known to drovers coming from the Campos de Lages region since the 18th century, Rancho Queimado was part of the colonial network of the Santa Isabel Colony, formed by families of Germanic and Luxembourgish origin, who reached as far as the Taquaras District, a meeting point of the old and new roads leading to Lages.

It is in this region that a beautiful building is found that was used for some years as Governor Hercílio Luz's country residence.

Built in the early 20th century, it features exposed brick architecture, flat tiles, and a gable roof. In 1911, the then governor of Santa Catarina, Hercílio Pedro da Luz, acquired the building to use it as a leisure and rest residence, due to the mild climate and altitude in the region.

The building, which initially had only a ground floor, underwent renovations with the installation of a two-story annex with an attic. The original features were maintained, notably the balcony with exposed brick railing, lambrequins on the eaves finish, and the roof with French cement tiles.

The current complex, comprising a house and farm totaling 184,413 m2, was acquired by the state government on February 25, 1985, and listed as a protected historical site by decree nº 25,880. In the region, be sure to appreciate the beautiful landscape and enjoy the large production of jams, sweets, and liqueurs.
