Church of Our Lady of Conception

The church, located on Morro da Lagoa, has undergone several renovations and modifications over the years, but even today it remains one of the main tourist attractions in the Lagoa region. Its importance is such that, in 1974, it was listed as a historical landmark by then-mayor Esperidião Amin, along with four other churches that represent Portuguese architecture on the island.

In addition to its historical and cultural importance, the church also holds great religious significance for the local community. In 1999, it was elevated to the status of a Sanctuary, making it an important place of pilgrimage and worship for the faithful in the region.

And when you visit, take a few minutes to walk up and down the cobblestone street that begins in the middle of the square, in front of the church, and ends at the intersection of João Antônio da Silveira and João Pacheco da Costa streets. The historic cobblestone pavement, made in the 19th century, provides access to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição da Lagoa, via a steep path with stones of different shapes.
