Church of Saint Michael

Share:

Located in the charming region of São Miguel, in Biguaçu, the Church of Saint Michael It has been a beacon of history since its inauguration on January 23, 1751. Over the years, it has witnessed significant transformations. In 1798, the old stucco church, which had fallen into ruin, was demolished, making way for a new brick building. This new building, in Luso-Brazilian style with a distinctive straight pediment, embodies the fusion of culture and architecture.

One of the church's treasures is the graceful bell, a generous gift from Emperor Dom Pedro II, offered in 1845 during his memorable visit to Santa Catarina. The importance of the Church of São Miguel transcends its religious role, as on November 14, 1969, it was recognized as a listed monument by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage.

Together with the Aqueduct and the Casa dos Açores, this church forms the magnificent Luso-Azorean Ensemble of São Miguel, a tribute to the region's cultural heritage.

Whether you are a history buff, an admirer of architecture, or a curious traveler, the Church of São Miguel and its surroundings promise a journey rich in knowledge and beauty, where every brick tells a story and every detail reveals the mastery of Luso-Brazilian culture.

Be sure to check out Azores House – Ethnographic Museum. This museum is housed in a building constructed in the 19th century, and is one of the most splendid records of the heyday of the Azorean-Madeiran colony in the town of São Miguel. It also boasts an impressive collection of furniture, clothing, and other items aimed at preserving and studying Azorean culture.
