The majestic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, A spiritual icon that stands imposingly in the heart of Águas Mornas, it holds within it a rich history intertwined with the very essence of the region. This is the third architectural jewel to occupy this sacred ground, a living expression of faith and devotion that attracts the attention of both visitors and the faithful, coming from all corners.
Conceived by the visionary priest-architect Vicente Schmitz, the plans for this marvel took shape in the late 1940s and were realized over the years. On the memorable day of April 8, 1951, the church opened its imposing doors to the community, becoming a place where the sacred and the sublime meet in perfect harmony.
However, the roots of this story extend even deeper. In the distant year of 1896, the first steps were taken with the construction of the first chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The walls of this chapel saw the light on January 6, 1898, marking the beginning of a spiritual journey that would echo through the years to come.
Driven by population growth and the marks of time that left their imprint on the original structure, the first chapel gave way to a larger, more modern building in the 1930s. The grand inauguration took place on September 6, 1931. However, the passage of time marked this era, as within two decades the third church took its rightful place. During this period, the community came together, donating materials and efforts – approximately 100,000 bricks were meticulously molded on site.
Today, this religious temple is the setting for events that celebrate faith and tradition. The annual festivals of Saint Sebastian in January and the Sacred Heart of Jesus in June fill the atmosphere with joy and devotion. We cannot fail to mention the solemn Corpus Christi procession, also in June, which adds a profound spiritual dimension.
More than just a place of prayer and faith, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a meeting point for the community. Its halls witness gatherings of senior citizens, wedding ceremonies, and social activities. As the epicenter of the celebrations of Saint Sebastian and the patron saint, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, magnificently held in January and June, the church perpetuates a legacy of festivities.
