Campeche Island is a true treasure on the east coast of Santa Catarina Island, in Florianópolis. Its crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and rich biodiversity make it one of the most idyllic destinations in the municipality.
Besides being a haven for those seeking relaxation and adventure — with diving, snorkeling, boat trips, and hiking trails — the island also holds a unique archaeological heritage: dozens of rock inscriptions and prehistoric sites that tell the ancient history of the region. Therefore, access to the archaeological trails is only permitted with authorized guides and upon payment of a fee, ensuring the conservation of this heritage.
Conservation Unit
In September 2025, the Municipal Environmental Foundation (Floram) created the Municipal Natural Monument of Campeche Island (MONA Ilha do Campeche), a Conservation Unit covering 62.5 hectares.
The measure reinforces the commitment to preservation and community-based tourism, organizing visitation in the face of pressures from mass tourism, industrial fishing, and irregular transportation. The site has been listed by Iphan (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage) since 2000 as an archaeological and landscape heritage site and houses the largest concentration of lithic workshops and rock engravings on the Brazilian coast.
