In honor of Gilberto Gerlach, A key figure in the city's cultural development, the museum was named after him in September 2021. Gerlach was a renowned filmmaker, historian, writer, and a significant influence on the cultural scene of São José and Brazil. In the museum, you will find a space dedicated to him, with personal items such as an old film projector, medals, and records of his participation in the Cannes Film Festival, as well as his historical-regional books, both self-authored and in collaboration with other writers.

O Solar dos Ferreira de Mello, The building where the museum is located was the first to be listed as a heritage site in the municipality. Restored in 1984, the site witnessed important moments in the history of São José and Santa Catarina. In 1893, during the Federalist Revolution, it housed the headquarters of the National Guard and the Provisional Government of the State. In 1845, it received a visit from Emperor Dom Pedro II. This Luso-Brazilian style building is a valuable example of the architecture of that time.
