Get to know Tamar Project in Florianópolis.
Southern Brazil is an important feeding ground for sea turtles, especially juveniles. Its cold sands do not provide a good environment for reproduction, so turtle nesting events are rare in this region.
In 2005, the Florianópolis branch of the Tamar Project Foundation was created to support activities carried out in the southern region, which focus on mitigating the impact of fishing on sea turtles. The Visitor Center was inaugurated in the same year with the aim of raising environmental awareness through visits from tourists, groups, and schools.
The space is located in Barra da Lagoa Beach, 50 meters from the sea, in an area of 5,000 m2 where the structure is fully suitable for use by wheelchair users and for visitation on rainy days.
The Visitor Center is registered with IBRAM (Brazilian Institute of Museums) and receives approximately 200,000 visitors per year, making it one of the 5 most visited museums in the southern region of Brazil.
Tamar has five tanks containing four of the five species of sea turtles found on the Brazilian coast, at different stages of life: green turtle, loggerhead turtle, olive ridley turtle, and hawksbill turtle. We also have a swimming pool and an aquarium with animals from the region.
