Black Extermination: Culture and Resistance in Florianópolis

How about experiencing Florianópolis from a different perspective and discovering stories that don't always appear in traditional tourist itineraries? On November 20, 2026, Black Consciousness Day, the capital's Historic Center hosts Desterro Negro: Cultura e Resistência, a guided walk that invites residents and visitors to learn about the memory, culture, and contribution of the black population to the city's formation.

For approximately two hours, the participants will walk through the streets, squares, and historical spaces of the former Desterro, discovering how the Black presence marked the development of Florianópolis, even in the face of the erasure of part of these stories from official records.

The itinerary passes through important sites, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Palácio Cruz e Sousa, Praça XV de Novembro, Travessa Ratcliff, Largo da Antonieta de Barros and Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. Each stop provides reflections on slavery, resistance, cultural identity and the legacy of the black population in the capital of the state of Santa Catarina.

More than just a tour of the Historical Center, Desterro Negro: Cultura e Resistência is an opportunity to get to know Florianópolis through narratives that value diversity and help understand the city's history.

The activity takes place on Black Consciousness Day, making the experience even more meaningful for those who want to use the occasion to learn, reflect, and discover new perspectives on Florianópolis.
