Before booking in the South of the Island, read this: what nobody tells you about staying there.

To share

Choosing where to stay in Florianópolis is one of the most important decisions of the trip — and also one that generates the most doubt. Each region of the island has its own character, its own rhythm, and the South is no different.

If you're thinking about staying in Armação, Campeche, Pântano do Sul, or Ribeirão da Ilha, this text is for you. We'll tell you, directly and honestly, what the South of the Island offers—and what it doesn't. No romanticizing, no scaring. Just what really matters so you can plan better.

Where is the South of the Island located?

The south of the island brings together some of the most preserved neighborhoods and beaches in Florianópolis:

Geographically, the South is farther from the Center than the East of the Island and roughly the same distance from the North — on average 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the exact location and time. This needs to be factored into your planning. If the idea is to explore other regions every day, the commute can be a burden. But if you want to experience the South intensely, this distance disappears quickly.

Advantages of staying in the South of the Island

Preserved and authentic nature

The South is perhaps the most preserved region of all of Florianópolis. Here the pace slows down, the vegetation is denser, the sea has a different force, and the landscapes are breathtaking.

Armação Beach It has a generous beauty, with open sea and an island in sight — the Campeche Island, just 1.5 km from the coast, with rock inscriptions and trails through the Atlantic Forest. The Southern Swamp It is one of the most tranquil and least impacted beaches on the island, surrounded by hills and with that fishing village feel that still resists the passage of time.

And the Lagoinha do Leste — one of the most stunning beaches in all of Florianópolis — is only accessible on foot or by boat, which says it all about the spirit of the South.

A culture that withstands the test of time.

Ribeirão da Ilha It is one of the most historic regions of Florianópolis. It was one of the first Azorean colonization centers on the island, and this heritage is still completely alive: in the architecture of the colorful houses by the water, in the Nossa Senhora da Lapa Church, in the wharves, and in the way of life.

If you want to understand the soul of Florianópolis beyond its beaches, the South is where this happens with the most force and authenticity.

The sea is for those who love to surf — and for those who prefer calm waters.

The South has variety. The north of Armação Beach It has consistent waves, highly valued by surfers. But Pântano do Sul offers calmer waters, ideal for those who just want to relax.

Depending on where you stay in the South, you can choose the beach that matches your travel style.

Seafood cuisine off the beaten tourist track.

The South is a paradise for those who love oysters and fresh seafood. Ribeirão da Ilha is home to some of the best oyster restaurants in Florianópolis — and many are located right on the waterfront, overlooking the South Bay.

Here you eat well and with much more authenticity than in the more touristy areas of the island. See the dining options here!

A tranquility that the North and East do not offer.

Even during peak season, some beaches in the south maintain a much lower number of visitors than the rest of the island.

Where to stay in the South of the Island

Unlike other regions, the South doesn't have a large concentration of hotels. Small guesthouses and other types of hotels are more common here. vacation rentals — houses and apartments scattered throughout the neighborhoods of the region, often offering more space, privacy, and value for money than traditional lodging.

This is, in fact, one of the most authentic experiences of staying in the South: you truly live in the neighborhood, and don't just pass through it. Also check out the options listed in the tab. Where to stay From Visite Floripa, filtering by the Southern region.

This information is important: If you're going to stay in the South, having a car isn't just convenient—it's practically indispensable.

Public transportation in the region is limited, and the distances between points of interest, markets, restaurants, and other areas of the island require independent transportation. Without a car, you'll rely on ride-sharing apps—which work, but can become quite expensive over a week-long trip.

If you're coming from out of town and plan to rent a car, great. If that's not an option, it's worth considering accommodation in another area with better transport infrastructure.

Disadvantages of staying in the South of the Island

Distance from other regions

This is the most significant point. The South is far from the other regions of the island. If you want to spend a day in Jurerê, Canasvieiras or in Conceição Lagoon, Allow at least an hour for travel—and more if you encounter peak season traffic.

If your itinerary involves a lot of traveling around the island, the South might not be the best base. But if the idea is to explore the South itself at a leisurely pace, this becomes irrelevant.

Less trade and service infrastructure

The South does have commerce, yes — but on a smaller scale than the North or the East. If you need a pharmacy on the corner, a large supermarket, or a huge variety of restaurants at any time, you'll need to travel a bit further.

This isn't a problem for those who plan well. But it's worth knowing beforehand.

Traffic at entrances and exits in the summer

SC-405, the main access road to the south of the island, gets congested during peak season. If you're going to be driving a lot, you'll notice this in your daily travels—especially on weekends.
